Seymour Grant Request Not Approved, Town Says They’ll Try Again

SEYMOUR – An application for a $16 million economic development grant was not approved by the state, Seymour First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis recently announced.

The Drugonis administration hoped the money would be used to build a connector road to Route 42 in Beacon Falls through land behind the Seymour Stop & Shop owned by Tom Haynes of the Haynes Development Co.

The idea was that the road would kickstart a privately funded $100 million mixed-use development project Haynes wants to build on the land – a larger version of his 30-acre Quarry Walk” on Route 67 in Oxford.

Voters Approve Town & School Budgets In Seymour

SEYMOURVoters approved a $66.4 million budget for fiscal year 2024 – 2025 at a second referendum Thursday (May 16).

Voters approved the $26.6 million town side of the budget by a vote of 860 – 628.

They also approved the $39.7 million budget for the board of education by a vote of 828 – 665.

The approved budget carries a mill rate of 36.84 mills.

That’s a .88 mill increase over the current mill rate of 35.98.

A single-family house on .28 acres on Wood Street assessed at $139,720 would pay $120 more in taxes next year.

Plea Offers Rejected In Fatal Seymour Hit-And-Run

DERBY — Two brothers arrested in connection to the 2021 hit-and-run death of an elderly couple on Route 67 rejected a plea deal on May 15 that would have put them behind bars for a decade.

Jair Irigoyen-Flores is accused of driving the vehicle that struck and killed James and Barbara Tamborra, both 81, of Shelton, as they attempted to cross the road at about 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.

Discovery Network Show To Feature Segment On Derby’s Sterling Opera House

DERBY – A television show featuring a segment on the historic Sterling Opera House is scheduled to air on Discovery Plus 10 p.m. Friday, May 17.

The show is Mysteries of the Abandoned: Hidden America.” The episode description is as follows: 

An old mining town in Wyoming provides sanctuary for Amelia Earhart, a hotel in the Deep South becomes a historical crossroads, and a forgotten Connecticut theater hides secrets beneath the surface.”

Ansonia Murder Suspect Due Back In Court In July

ANSONIAJose Morales, the father of missing child Vanessa Morales and the suspect in the 2019 murder of Vanessa’s mother, Christine Holloway, will appear in Milford court again on July 30.

Morales was arrested more than four years ago in connection to the Ansonia homicide. In January, prosecutors offered him a plea deal, the details of which have not been made public. 

He was originally scheduled to accept or reject that deal in March, but his attorney requested more time to consider it. On May 15, he was scheduled to appear again, but his date was pushed back to July.

Morales has not yet entered a plea.
