DERBY — Two brothers arrested in connection to the 2021 hit-and-run death of an elderly couple on Route 67 rejected a plea deal on May 15 that would have put them behind bars for a decade.
Jair Irigoyen-Flores is accused of driving the vehicle that struck and killed James and Barbara Tamborra, both 81, of Shelton, as they attempted to cross the road at about 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.
DERBY – A television show featuring a segment on the historic Sterling Opera House is scheduled to air on Discovery Plus 10 p.m. Friday, May 17.
The show is “Mysteries of the Abandoned: Hidden America.” The episode description is as follows:
“An old mining town in Wyoming provides sanctuary for Amelia Earhart, a hotel in the Deep South becomes a historical crossroads, and a forgotten Connecticut theater hides secrets beneath the surface.”
ANSONIA – Jose Morales, the father of missing child Vanessa Morales and the suspect in the 2019 murder of Vanessa’s mother, Christine Holloway, will appear in Milford court again on July 30.
Morales was arrested more than four years ago in connection to the Ansonia homicide. In January, prosecutors offered him a plea deal, the details of which have not been made public.
He was originally scheduled to accept or reject that deal in March, but his attorney requested more time to consider it. On May 15, he was scheduled to appear again, but his date was pushed back to July.
ANSONIA – While Mayor David Cassetti’s administration says his proposed budget fully funds city schools, the Ansonia Board of Education has not actually voted on a recommended budget for the coming year.
The nonvote underlines how the budget formulation process in Ansonia has changed under Mayor Cassetti.
Previously, the school board used to vote on a budget in public, and then send the budget to Ansonia City Hall.
The ultimate decision on the school district’s bottom line – and the bottom line only – would be voted upon by the Board of Aldermen, or, before a 2014 charter change, the Board of Apportionment and Taxation.
ANSONIA – Ansonia is one of several winners in a budget stabilization bill passed by the General Assembly on Tuesday (May 7).
The $370 million bill includes about $850,000 in aid to Ansonia. A $750,000 one-time payment will go directly to the city, while another $100,000 is earmarked for improvements at Gatison Park.
The bill, which is expected to be signed by Gov. Ned Lamont, passed with a 103 — 48 vote in the House and a 26 — 10 vote in the Senate, mostly along party lines.
At 6:15 p.m. sharp on Tuesday, Christopher ambled over to the 180 Center on a crooked foot.
